TODAYʼS PROGRAM - WELCOME Lacy Lang & Jake Buffington, RYLA Attendees

11/2 - District Governor Chuck Root
11/9 - Dixon Andrews, GB Police Chief

WORLD POLIO DAY
When Rotary launched PolioPlus in 1985, the "plus" signaled the belief that the polio eradication effort would increase immunizations against five other diseases prevalent in children: measles, tuberculosis, diphtheria, whooping cough, and tetanus. As time went on, the list of benefits grew. Polio immunization campaigns created an avenue for other lifesaving health interventions, such as the distribution of vitamin A supplements. New equipment for transporting and storing vaccines made it easier to combat infectious diseases in developing areas.

The "plus" in PolioPlus means that Rotarians are doing more than stopping the spread of polio in the last four countries in which it is endemic; they also are building a legacy of infrastructure and partnerships that will support the fight against infectious disease long after polio is gone.

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT GLORIA
One of the best parts of being President of our club is being able to raise funds to donate to our local organizations. Thanks to all of you for helping raise the money that we were able to donate to the Gold Beach Youth Soccer, the Curry Sportfishing Association, and the Gold Beach Senior Center.
It takes all of us!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
"All major religious traditions carry basically the same message, that is love, compassion and forgiveness. The important thing is they should be part of our daily lives." ~ Dalai Lama

FOUNDATION UPDATE
Since the Gold Beach club started, there have been 84 Paul Harris Fellows (donations totaling $1000 or more during their lifetime) with $128,124.85 total dollars donated to the Foundation from our club. Last year, we exceeded our goal by 52% ($1750 goal / $2662 donated). According to our records through last month, our members have donated $200. to date. If we look at the two grants we have received in the last two fiscal years, nearly every dollar donated has come back to our club ($2000 last year and $800 this year compared to $2862 donated last year and so far this year). Let's try to make our goal this year!

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT GLORIA
Thanks to all who are volunteering for the Ready to Smile Program. We are excited to have so many Rotary Volunteers helping out! At the Curry Health Foundation meeting on Monday night it was decided that our Rotary Grant would be used to help purchase a much needed sterilizer for the program which will help speed up the process.

MEETING UPDATE

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The question isn't who is going to let me; it's who is going to stop me." ~ Ayn Rand (1905-1982)

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT GLORIA
Thanks to all who attended the Assembly last week. I always appreciate all your input. Please don't forget to put on your calendar our upcoming visit from District Governor Chuck Root. He will be here for our November 2 meeting and we are planning to have a dinner with him on the evening before. I am still hoping for a volunteer to host a potluck dinner at someone's house. We could do it at a restaurant but it will be much more informal if we do it at someone's home. Please let me know if you are willing to be the host for this. We usually have approximately 20 folks attend.

MEETING UPDATE
We had a very informative meeting last week. It was good to be able to share thoughts on our fundraisers and listen to suggestions from the membership.

FOUNDATION UPDATE
Since Jackie and Amber missed updating us at last week's meeting let's see if they can give us an update on our giving to date. Let's see if we can
reach our goal this year. We were recently notified that we will be awarded $800 though the District Simplified Grant. Thanks go to Mary and Dale for
submitting the request for funds.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
"If you have the courage to begin, you have the courage to succeed." ~ David Viscott (1938-1996)

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT GLORIA
Hopefully you will all be able to attend today's meeting. We will have September board meeting Tuesday night at the Nor'Wester Restaurant and I will update you. Please ask questions, bring suggestions and let me know how you think the past fourteen weeks have gone. District Governor Chuck Root will be here on November 11, at our Board meeting we will discuss our plans for his visit and we will update you all on Wednesday.

One thing I thought might be nice would be a potluck at the home of one of our members which would give us all the opportunity to talk with him. Any volunteers to host?

Bike the Rogue T-Shirts. There are several t-shirts left from the event, anyone interested in buying one they are $15.00 each.

FIRST HARVEST UPDATE
This summer Rotarians Bill McArdle of the Port Orford Club and Jim Van Camp of the Gold Beach Club made two trips to Medford to pick up and deliver peaches to food banks on the south coast. 2,800 pounds of beautiful, delicious peaches were delivered to food banks in Brookings, Gold Beach, Port Orford and Langlois. These deliveries were a part of First Harvest of Rotary District 5110 efforts to provide fresh produce to those in need using existing resources as much as possible. Thanks again Jim!

FOUNDATION UPDATE
Every Rotarian - Every Year. Jackie and Amber will update us on our giving to date. Let's see if we can reach our goal this year.

MEMBER UPDATE
It was very refreshing to hear new member Aki's story. We look forward to updates from all new members. It helps when we see where we can improve our visibility in Gold Beach!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
"The more you recognize and express gratitude for the things you have, the more things you will have to express gratitude for."~ Zig Ziglar (1926-)

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT GLORIA
We were so lucky to have great weather this past Saturday for our "Bike the Rogue" event. Thanks to Corey for organizing this event again this year, hopefully we will have a new chairperson so it can continue in the future and become even bigger and bigger.

Our Board meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday evening at the Nor'Wester Restaurant at 5:15 PM. Colleen has graciously allowed us to meet in their back room. I have been trying to choose a date that will work for all board members and it seems the best day will be the third Tuesday of each month. This should make it easier for our membership to attend as well!

FOUNDATION UPDATE
This year our annual District Rotary Foundation Seminar will be held in Central Oregon at Sisters High School, in Sisters, on Saturday, October 1.  You are invited to attend this important annual event which will this year include a Rotary Foundation Dinner on Friday evening, September 30 where we will celebrate all that our Rotary clubs have accomplished and hear a great speaker, Rotary Foundation Trustee, Steve Brown who will tell us about his 11 trips to Afghanistan during the past ten years to work on various Rotary Projects. In conjunction with the dinner (which is not a fund raiser), there will also be a Project Fair showcasing various Rotary club projects. Your Keynote Speaker on Sat will be Karangathi Njoroge, District 5110's first Rotary World Peace Fellow. For more detailed info visit the Foundation Seminar Page.

Our Rotary Foundation is no longer headed by Bob Manners. President Eide has appointed Amber Hughes and Jackie Madaris to handle the Rotary Foundation. Madaris will be in charge of publicity at meetings.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE
The Membership and Retention Committee provides training, resources, and support for all clubs wishing to increase membership and retain members by actively engaging their members. Rotary must change its culture from one of attendance to one of engagement. Since on the average clubs lose 10% of their membership each year a club that does not want to shrink must bring in several new members.

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT GLORIA
I hope you all had a enjoyable holiday weekend. We were blessed with nice weather. I have been enjoying having my son Jake home from the Coast Guard the past few weeks. We really miss him when he is away so it is nice to be able to spend quality time with him while he is here. He has been enjoying the sun, fishing, hiking and spending time with his friends and family. It will be sad to see him go.

Don't forget this weekend is the Bike the Rogue, please ask Corey if there is any help he needs to make this a success again this year.

This Month in the Rotarian
By now you should all have received the Rotarian Magazine. There are some great articles about Tipping while Traveling, Whooping Cough and so much more. I am thinking we should start a competition to see who completes the crossword puzzle in the magazine.  It is fairly easy and would be a fun challenge...anyone up for it?

Speaking of challenges, we have gone several months without working on our Fitness Goals, anyone out there want to head up another Fitness Challenge. Talk to President Gloria about ideas.

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT GLORIA
Thanks for all the help last weekend at the Salmon Derby! We had a great turnout and lots of volunteer support from all of you! We will be posting pictures on our website soon! Our next club activity is the Bike the Rogue scheduled for Saturday September 10. Corey has been diligently planning this event and it looks like it will be even greater than last year! Hope to see you all there either staffing a check point or riding along!

We will be planning a road cleanup soon. Summer tourist season is almost over and it is time for us to get out there and get our section of road and trail cleaned up before the winter.

Labor Day The first US Labor Day was observed on September 5, 1882, in Boston, MA by the Central Labor Union of New York. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894.  For most of us, it just means summer is over... enjoy your weekend, do something fun.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

SUPPLIES FOR SUCCESS
Donʼt forget school starts next week, expect to see our School Zone lights flashing in the mornings and afternoons.  Keep our students safe by reducing your speed to 20 MPH through the school zone. Itʼs a short zone and really only adds seconds to your drive.  Don't forget to bring supplies with you to our meetings. School will be starting soon and there are some great deals out there on school supplies.

MEMBERSHIP MINUTE
At our last Assembly President Gloria spoke about the Friends of the Fair and the issue with us not having enough attendance at our meetings for them to continue to be able to afford to have us meet there. This is a great facility with a private setting that creates a special place for us to meet.

We must have a minimum of 25 attendees eating lunch or we may have to pay the difference out of our club funds. Please take a moment to look around and see if there is someone missing that you could pick up and bring to the meeting, or call them and remind them. Thanks! Your editor.

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT GLORIA
The past week has been spent recruiting donations for the auction raffle at the upcoming Salmon Derby. If you have not donated please think about a donation you can make to help make this a success! We are planning a Dessert Fundraiser for the auction, if you haven't already made a donation please think about baking an item for our auction! Also, we will have a sign up sheet at the meeting for all of you to volunteer. Remember it takes all of us to make these fundraisers successful! If you were not there at Party of the Park and are not planning on volunteering this coming Saturday perhaps there is another non-profit organization you should consider joining instead!

Party at the Park. Thanks to all the volunteers this past Saturday! We served lots of hamburgers and hotdogs to many children and their families. The funds raised will be used for the Curry Public Library! It takes our entire club to make these types of fundraisers successful!
